How to spend your free time near Gatwick Airport

As the second busiest airport in the UK, with passenger figures rising to a new high of 45 million this year, Gatwick Airport is one of the busiest places to be for any UK traveller. And yet, if you’re staying overnight to catch an early flight, or waiting around for the next plane after a cancellation, the hours can wane. With this in mind, we’ve put together a top list of things to do for a stress-free and boredom-free stay before you board.

Chessington World of Adventures

If you can’t stand the thought of being cooped up with lively kids at the airport all day, take a quick trip to Chessington World of Adventures, one of the UK’s largest theme parks about 20 miles from the airport. If you’ve travelled to the airport by taxi, don’t worry; there are other ways to get to the theme park. Either take a train to Clapham Junction then walk to Chessington South; get the number 22 or 465 line bus, or hop in a taxi again.

Archway Theatre

Spend an evening at the quaint Archway Theatre, an intimate, 95-seat, aptly-named venue underneath the arches of the railway line at Horley. The team stages 10 main house productions a year, with additional youth workshops and studio productions, just 1.5 miles from the airport gates. Check what’s on before your trip.

Gatwick Aviation Museum

Alternatively, stay a little closer to your terminal by spending a few hours at the Gatwick Aviation Museum, just over a mile away along Lowfield Heath Road. The educational attraction, which boasts a Certificate of Excellence on TripAdvisor, has enough points of interest to keep the kids entertained for hours. Sights include an old aircraft hangar, the Shackleton with guided tours and images of Gatwick from its origins as a horse racing venue.

Let’s Race

Any adrenaline junkie will appreciate a ride on a professional race car simulator at Let’s Race: a unique entertainment center for racing and motorsport enthusiasts in Horley, 1.6 miles away from the airport. With restaurants and hotels in the vicinity, you’ll find everything you need for a full day out near Gatwick.

Gatwick Lounges

Once you’ve enjoyed a day trip near the airport, nestle down into one of its stylish lounges to get your fill of food, drink and entertainment before you board. Try the Clubrooms lounges at the North and South Gatwick Terminals, which have both received glowing reviews on TripAdvisor.
